Only Iwan Rheon

Iwan Rheon scarcely misses a beat when asked what would he do if he could be invisible for a day. ‘I’d go behind the scenes at Downing Street to see what David Cameron is really up to,’ he deadpans. Really? ‘People expect you to say something like: “Look at girls in the showers,”’ he jokes, ‘so I try and come up with something that at least isn’t what you’d expect.’

This isn’t just some random riff on fantasy talents. Rheon has given invisibility due consideration because that’s the secret power lurking behind the troubled face of Simon, his character in Misfits, E4’s breakout Bafta-winning hit about a random bunch of Asbo youths.

After getting caught in a mysterious storm, they find they’ve gained powers ranging from telepathy to time manipulation. Watching them coming to terms with the transformation is what gives Misfits, now starting its second series, its inner drive.

The intense Simon was a natural fit for 25-year-old Rheon, rapidly carving a niche as a teen neurotic. He sprang to attention as troubled Moritz in award-winning musical Spring Awakening, played the introverted lead in John Osborne’s rediscovered play The Devil Inside Him and sent the whole image up as preciously mumbling actor Ben, the object of Simon Amstell’s unrequited love in hit BBC2 sitcom Grandma’s House.
